South East Scotland - # - skinnybob72's Photos

This gallery covers the East Coast Main Line from just outside Edinburgh to Berwick upon Tweed. The most rewarding stretch of the line for photography is around Grantshouse and Houndwood where the hills offer some lovely vantage points, while the Lamberton area offers the North Sea as a backdrop.

66426 passes Blindwells working the diverted 4Z43 Daventry - Grangemouth "Tesco Express" on 31st January 2009. This location has since become rather more overgrown making shots more difficult to obtain. ISO 200 1/400 F4.5

66414 "James the Engine" passes Houndwood on the ECML with the 4Z43 Daventry - Grangemouth 'Tesco Express' on 21st March 2009. This service normally uses the WCML but was diverted due to engineering works. ISO 200 1/1000 F4.5

Still sporting Royal Train colours, 47798 rounds the curve at Dolphingstone (near Prestonpans) with the 1Z47 Cleethorpes - Perth charter on 11th April 2009. 47786 was on the rear. The loco was on hire to WCRC and this was one of the few tours that it worked during that time. ISO 100 1/500 F5

Advenza 47237 passes Prestonpans with Grand Central HST power car 43065 running as the 5Z47 Heaton - Craigentinny stock move on 21st April 2009. Advenza went out of business in October 2009 and the loco was subsequently taken on by West Coast Railway Co.

DRS pair 37069 and 37607 are seen just north of Longniddry station with the 2Q08 Derby - Edinburgh test train on 25th April 2009. This shot is no longer possible without a ladder as a 6ft fence has been erected since this shot was taken. ISO 100 1/640 F4

Advenza trio 57006, 47237 and 66841 are seen at Prestonpans running as 0Z95 Craigentinny - Stockton on 14th June 2009. The 47 had failed earlier in the week and so the 57 and 66 were sent to collect it. ISO 200 1/500 F6.3

East Coast livery 43251 passes Grantshouse with a northbound service on 15th May 2010. ISO 200 1/1000 F5.6

Take away the wires and this could be a scene from the ECML in the 1970's, as 55022 "ROYAL SCOTS GREY" is seen heading south at Penmanshiel with the 1Z88 Edinburgh - Sheffield on 31st May 2010. ISO 250 1/800 F3.5

The Class 40 Preservation Society's 40145 approaches Musselburgh Station with the 1Z41 Edinburgh - York charter on 20th June 2010. The loco never ran in these colours in BR service making it look a bit odd to those who did see the class in those days. A more traditional livery is likely to be applied in the near future. The spot where this photo was taken was where the Lothian Lines left the ECML, running through Newcraighall before joining the Edinburgh South Suburban Line at Niddrie West Jcn. ISO
